Hackensack UMC Welcomes Rizk As Thoracic Oncology, Surgery Chief

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Department of Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center and the John Theurer Cancer Center recently welcomed Dr. Nabil Pierre Rizk as the new chief of the division of thoracic surgery at HackensackUMC and the co-chief of thoracic oncology at the John Theurer Cancer Center.

Rizk specializes in thoracic surgery with a particular interest in lung cancers, esophageal cancers and mediastinal tumors. 

“It is a privilege to have Dr. Rizk as a member of the HackensackUMC team,” said Robert Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “Dr. Rizk’s extensive experience will undoubtedly further enhance the outstanding services provided with the division of thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology.” 

Rizk joins HackensackUMC from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he practiced as an associate attending physician for 15 years. He is board-certified in thoracic surgery and general surgery. 

“I am looking forward to working together with the John Theurer Cancer Center and HackensackUMC’s team of professionals to continue to build upon a strong division of thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology,” said Rizk. “I am particularly delighted to be joining the two surgeons already working at HackensackUMC: Dr. Nazly Shariati and Dr. Geoffrey Pelz. Dr. Shariati is an expert with extensive experience in the management of complex tumors of the lung and airway, and Dr. Pelz is a superb surgeon with a particular interest in minimally invasive approaches to diagnose and treat thoracic cancers.” 

Rizk received his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and his medical degree at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. He pursued his general surgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by fellowship training in thoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

In addition, Rizk completed an international fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a cardiothoracic fellowship at New York Hospital/Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
